Lancaster County Issues Burn Ban

Lancaster, PA — On Wednesday, June 7th, the Lancaster County Commissioners issued a burn ban for the entirety of Lancaster County effective Friday, June 9th. The county-wide ban will be in effect for a 30-day period. The ban can be rescinded earlier by the commissioners pending a change in wildfire potential.

The Commissioners voted on the ban following a joint request from 13 Fire Chiefs of Lancaster County and a recommendation from the Pennsylvania District Forester. The ban is being imposed to ensure the safety of life, property and natural resources in Lancaster County. Currently, wildfire potential is extremely high in Lancaster County with a record-breaking lack of precipitation, strong winds and high temperatures.

Open burning is defined as the ignition and subsequent burning of any combustible material outside in either a bum barrel, fire ring, or on the ground. The use of propane or gas stoves, charcoal briquette grills, or the use of tobacco in any form is not prohibited under the county's burn ban. The burn ban also does not prevent the use of fireworks, but all citizens are encouraged to take extra caution when using fireworks in dry conditions.
