On Christmas morning, 2003, a tragic fire took the lives of Rebecca, Scott, and 7-year-old Amanda Schoenberger in their Warwick Township home. Officials feel that the lack of a working smoke detector directly contributed to the tragic loss of life.

Shortly after the fire, Shannon Grodzicki, a classmate and friend of Amanda, told her father that she wanted to do something "so that nobody ever dies in a fire again."

The Lititz Fire Company #1 and its fellow Warwick Emergency Services Alliance (WESA) members have established the Amanda Schoenberger Memorial Smoke Detector Program. This program provides the distribution of smoke detectors at no cost to any residents within the Warwick School District. We want to assure that every household in the Warwick School District is equipped with at least one properly installed working smoke detector on each floor of the home. We also want to increase awareness of the dangers of fire.

The family and friends of Amanda will volunteer their time to distribute the detectors. Also, we have arrangements through various Boy Scout troops to assist with the installation of the detectors, if necessary.
