Warwick Township Riparian Park: With physical and financial assistance from the PA Fish & Boat Commission, as well as financial assistance from Trout Unlimited and the Lititz Sportsmen’s Association, Warwick Township Public Works staff installed nine log vane deflectors (12 or 15 feet in length), three additional logs and stone to repair an existing bank cover crib, and stone to close off the breach in the north bank. The log vane deflectors are intended to increase habitat for macro-invertebrates as well as creating pocket water for trout and other species. The repaired bank cover crib will improve overhead cover as well as eliminating a possible safety issue. By closing off the breach in the north bank, access to that bank is once again possible. This is a continuation of over a decade’s worth of effort to upgrade and maintain this beautiful gem in our community. Stream Cleanup Day:
Approximately 100 volunteers came out on Saturday, March 15, 2008 for the Great PA Clean-Up Event. These volunteers collected about 1.5 tons of trash from the Millport Conservancy, and Riparian and Linear Parks. Two local businesses, Johnson & Johnson and McNeil, provided coffee and doughnuts, and PennDOT provided gloves, vests, and trash bags. The following weekend, LRWA provided refreshments for Trout Unlimited for their efforts to clean up the Banta Site. Next year’s annual cleanup will be on Saturday, March 21, 2009. For that cleanup, LRWA will attempt to categorize the trash collected by originator; for example, volunteers will note which stores plastic bags come from, and then ask those stores for contributions to future cleanup efforts. Thanks to the PA DEP and a Growing Greener II grant, as well as substantial community involvement, the Warwick Township Municipal Campus has become a showcase for stormwater best management practices. In addition to a bio-detention basin that is over half an acre in size, we have one of the largest areas of pervious pavement and sidewalk in Lancaster County.
Looking ahead to the Future..
During 2009, the LRWA will need new members to join the board and existing membership volunteers to help with these projects. For information, please contact the LRWA at 717-626-8900.
