Warwick Emergency Services Fire Prevention Efforts in the Community

During National Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, the volunteers and staff from the Warwick Emergency Services were kept busy teaching fire prevention in the community. Over 40 firefighters and EMS personnel from Lititz, Rothsville, Brunnerville and Brickerville Fire Companies and Rothsville and Warwick Ambulances spent time at local schools, pre-schools, day cares and community events directly educating over 750 students. Over 100 combined hours of effort was committed to teaching the children about fire safety.

In addition, every student in the Warwick elementary schools was provided with literature and important fire safety facts from the fire companies. Combined a total of nearly 3,000 students in area were reached by the efforts of the emergency services workers and over $7,600 worth of fire safety material was distributed to the students.

Even though National Fire Prevention Week is recognized each year in October, fire safety should be practiced year-round. Smoke detectors should be installed on all levels of homes, including in each bedroom. The batteries in smoke detectors should be tested every month and replaced at least once per year. Matches and lighters should never be within reach of children, including during times of using fireworks. Matches, lighters and fireworks all can cause serious burns so adults should always do everything possible to keep their children safe. Families should designate a meeting place for their family in the event of the need to evacuate their home and then practice exit drills with their children.

Any schools or businesses who wish to receive fire safety education for their students or employees may contact Warwick Emergency Services Commission Administrator Duane Ober at 626-8900 or at dober@warwicktownship.org.
